United States senator Rand Paul said he finds it “ironic” that large numbers of migrants are ilegally entering the country at the southern border, while tennis great Novak Djokovic can’t because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19.
“I find it ironic that we won’t let the world’s greatest tennis player in because he is not vaccinated, Djokovic, when we let in thousands and thousands of migrants come in unvaccinated. Talk about hypocrisy!
Maybe you should talk to the CDC about that,” Paul said during an appearance on Fox News.
Djokovic running out of time to be cleared for the US Open
The US Open starts on August 29 and now it is very likely that Djokovic will indeed miss out on his second Grand Slam tournament in 2022.
Djokovic has received lots of support since Wimbledon as several American politicians, including Kentucky Senator Paul, have publicly stated that the Serb definitely should be allowed to enter the US and play at the US Open.
Daniil Medvedev, who lifted his first and lone Grand Slam title after beating Djokovic in last year’s US Open final, showed support to the Serb. Medvedev noted that he can’t do anything to help Djokovic but added that he would like to see the 21-time Grand Slam champion at the US Open.
“Yeah, for sure,” Medvedev answered, per Eurosport. “I cannot do anything. It is the government who sets the rules, so I do not know if it can actually change or not. If you ask me, if I would be the decision-maker, sure I want Novak to play.
I like it when the tournament [has] the best players in the world”. In early August, Djokovic sent out an Instagram post, confirming that he was preparing for the US Open. But nothing has changed in recent weeks and Djokovic still can’t enter the United States as an unvaccinated foreigner.
