Wawrinka has had certain success against the Big Three over the course of his career.
Stan Wawrinka says playing the Big Three has always been “a great challenge.” In the era which was absolutely dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Wawrinka managed to make a great career for himself and win three Grand Slams.
There have been many great players over the last 20 years who who finished their careers without a Grand Slam – the Big Three were the main reason for that. But while some were crumbling under the pressure of playing the Big Three in Grand Slam finals, Wawrinka thrived in those moments.
Wawrinka beat Djokovic twice in Grand Slam finals and Nadal once, respectively. “We all know how great they are, since ever, so it was always a great challenge to able play against them, to be able to find solutions against them,” Wawrinka said.
“I am super happy to what I have achieved so far, to be able to beat them in those big moments, In those finals of Grand slams. It is the biggest challenge one can have as an athelete, as a person that you can have in the centre court.”
Wawrinka on the US Open
Wawrinka, 37, was out for a year before returning to action in March. Last year, Wawrinka underwent two foot surgeries.
But Wawrinka feels he can still play there and he is looking forward to hopefully playing at least a few more years. On his return to New York the US Open, Wawrinka called it as one of his “favorite cities and tournaments.”
“Its been amazing 12-15 years on tour,” Wawrinka said. “I still want to play few more years and I am happy to back here, It’s one of my favourite cities, it’s one of my favorite tournament.” In 2016, Wawrinka lifted his first and lone US Open title after beating Djokovic in the final. Back then, Wawrinka delivered a monstrous performance to upset Djokovic in the final.
