Tennis – Federer has water in his troubled knee and could skip the Laver Cup.
The fifth edition of the Laver Cup takes place between September 23-25 in London. The event should gather four of the most accomplished players of the past two decades, with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray signed to play.
Still, Federer could skip the event or play only one match due to ongoing knee issues. Roger has not played since the last year’s Wimbledon, embracing the third knee surgery and recovering ever since. The Swiss plans to play the Laver Cup and Basel in the upcoming weeks, but his knee is still not in the best shape.
Federer is unhappy with the pace of his progress on the practice court, although he is doing everything to make a return in London. By some reports, Roger has water in his troubled knee again, which causes pain when he plays.
If Federer skips the Laver Cup, he should be back in Basel in October if everything goes well, feeling eager to compete again after missing so many events in the past three seasons.

Federer remained competitive for two decades and finished the 2019 season inside the top-3 after lifting the Masters 1000 crown and reaching the Wimbledon final.
Roger could not keep the same pace in 2020 after experiencing a knee injury that has ruined his last two and a half years. Federer underwent three surgeries while playing only six tournaments in the past three seasons. Roger underwent two knee surgeries following the 2020 Australian Open semi-final and skipped the rest of the year.
He returned in March 2021 in Doha and played three matches ahead of Roland Garros. Roger found his form again and scored three victories in Paris. Happy with his progress, Federer withdrew ahead of the Matteo Berrettini clash to preserve his knee for the beloved grass season.
Roger experienced his earliest Halle exit after falling to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round, hoping for a better run at Wimbledon. The veteran stopped the clock during his 22nd appearance at the All England Club. An eight-time champion toppled Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet, Cameron Norrie and Lorenzo Sonego to advance into the quarter-final as the oldest player in the Open era!
Roger met Hubert Hurkacz and suffered his worst Wimbledon loss. The Pole beat the Swiss 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 in Federer’s first bagel at Majors since the 2008 Roland Garros final. Roger underwent the third surgery a few weeks later, and his recovery process is still on. Roger would love to play two events this year and embrace a more dynamic schedule in 2023.
