Djokovic looked sharp in his first match in two months.
Novak Djokovic was thrilled with the performance he delivered in his first match post-Wimbledon. Djokovic, 35, made his return to competitive action this Saturday at the Laver Cup. Djokovic, who skipped the entire North American hard court swing due to his vaccination status, crushed Frances Tiafoe 6-1 6-3 in his first match in two months.
“I hadn’t played for two months, the last match was at Wimbledon in this city, down the road, so I’m really glad to continue the run, pretty decent match,” Djokovic reflected. “I was seeing the ball very well, no doubt about it.
Hadn’t done many things wrong today, couldn’t be happier with the return to the tour, winning for the team after a long day yesterday, a very emotional day. It wasn’t easy to restart the engines and step out on the court and do what you do in the best possible way, so I’m just happy for the performance and glad I brought another two points to the team.”
Djokovic dominated Tiafoe
The two players served out the opening two games of the match and they were tied to one game apiece to start the match. Then, Djokovic claimed back-to-back breaks and won the next five games to win the first set in style.
After easily winning the first set, Djokovic started the second set by breaking Tiafoe in the very opening first game of the set. Tiafoe had his first break point in the second game of the second set, but Djokovic saved to take a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth game, Djokovic had two break points for a double-break lead but didn’t convert. Djokovic maybe didn’t get his second break in the fifth game, but he broke Tiafoe again in the ninth game when the American was serving to stay in the match. In his first match since winning Wimbledon, Djokovic looked sharp and lost a total of four games.
