Djokovic capped off his season on the best possible way.
Novak Djokovic admitted that this year’s ATP Finals victory felt “even bigger” considering everything that he had been through this year. On Sunday, Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud 7-5 6-3 to lift his sixth ATP Finals title.
The 2022 season was the most challenging season of Djokovic’s career since he was denied participation at two Grand Slam and four Masters tournaments. Also, Djokovic experienced deportation first time in his life when his visa Australia visa was revoked at the start of the 2022 season.
“Of course, very satisfying and pleasing considering the journey this year that started really badly in Australia with all the things happening. So this victory is even bigger as I said, considering the circumstances that my team, my family and I have been through, but I felt I was not alone.
I felt big support from my people, from Serbia, from the region. It was just a matter of time before I would find that balance and optimal strength in my game in order to really peak and start playing the best tennis I possibly can.
Midway through the season that started to happen and I won Wimbledon and after Wimbledon I think I lost one match only,” Djokovic told Eurosport.
Djokovic thrilled with his finish to the season
After missing the entire North American hard court swing, Djokovic made four finals in as many tournaments played during the indoor swing.
Djokovic made it all the way at the Tel Aviv Open, Astana Open and ATP Finals, while he ended as runner-up at the Paris Masters. “It’s been an amazing finish, I couldn’t ask for a better scenario. I’m still greatly motivated and inspired to play tennis at this level and I’m so happy I’ll be able to go back to Australia and play at my most successful Grand Slam.
We’ll take it from there,” Djokovic reflected. Now, Djokovic will take some time to rest before he kicks off his preparation for the 2023 Australian Open.
