Novak Djokovic gives his verdict on quality of Astana Open

Novak Djokovic praised Nur-Sultan as the host city for an ATP 500 event and added this year’s Astana Open main draw reminds of a Grand Slam or a Masters tournament. After two years with an ATP 250 license, the Astana Open was promoted to an ATP 500 event.

The Astana Open organizers have managed to bring some of the world’s biggest names to the tournament as Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Hubert Hurkacz have all participated at this year’s tournament edition.

“The tournament had a very strong line-up and when I saw the draw I was surprised because such a line-up is usually gathered at the Masters or Grand Slams. I’ve spoken to other players and all are of the same opinion – everything is organized at the highest level here,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic loves his time in Nur-Sultan

In 2019, Djokovic clashed Rafael Nadal in an exhibition match in Nur-Sultan. Now, he is back to Kazakhstan for an ATP tournament. “The last time I was in Kazakhstan was in 2019, when Rafa and I had an exhibition match in Astana.

We didn’t get to see everything in one day, but now I’m playing the full-time tournament, so I have a whole week ahead, and I will definitely visit the local sights,” Djokovic added. Djokovic is not the only player that has spoken highly of the Astana Open.

Medvedev, who once competed at the Astana Challenger, said he felt six years ago that the Kazakh capital deserved to have an ATP event. “I remember it was really well organized and I thought maybe they will one day have an ATP event,” Medvedev said.

“And now we are here. It is an ATP 500 and the draw is insane. I’m really happy for the team working around this tournament for them to have such a success.”
