Nick Kyrgios says it would be cool if he could play mixed doubles with Ashleigh Barty. In a video for Tennis Channel, several players were asked with which legend they would love to play mixed doubles. Kyrgios, who made his first Grand Slam final at this year’s Wimbledon, named former three-time Grand Slam champion Barty.
After winning this year’s Australian Open, Barty announced a shock retirement from tennis at 25. “I don’t think me and Ashleigh Barty ever teamed-up, but I think that would be a pretty nice combination,” Kyrgios said.
Kyrgios slammed the media for interpreting his comment
Kyrgios captured the Australian Open men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis, while Barty won the Australian Open women’s singles title. “I would say that we’ve created probably the best atmosphere this tournament’s ever seen, to be brutally honest with you“Ash’s father came to us and said the crowd was the best he’s ever seen.
Obviously Ash is a hell of a player. But, people watch my matches. Everywhere I play around the world the stadiums are full for that reason,” Kyrgios said after he and Kokkinakis won the title. Some Australian media interpreted those comments as Kyrgios taking a shot at Barty.
Kyrgios then took to Instagram, where he made it clear that he had nothing but love and respect for Barty. “F— you media. Honestly, I said nothing disrespectful to Ashleigh Barty — I sad that the crowd this year was amazing and I feel as if Thanasi Kokkinakis and I were a big part of that.
Ash’s father came to me and even said that. All I said was that when people watch me around the world the stadiums are full, I grew up with Ash, always knew her potential,” Kyrgios said in an Instagram Story. Last year, Barty won Wimbledon.
This year, Australia fell just short of having another champion at Wimbledon as Kyrgios ended runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the final at The Championships.
