Jack Sock showed his respect and appreciation for Andy Murray following their doubles match. On Wednesday night in Glasgow, Sock and Rajeev Ram defeated Murray and Joe Salisbury 5-7 6-4 7-5 to give the United States the deciding second point in their tie versus Great Britain.
After two singles rubbers, the United States and Great Britain were tied to one-point apiece. In a match that lasted two hours and 49 minutes, Sock and Ram escaped with a tight win after overcoming difficult opponents and the Glasgow crowd.
“We were playing against one of the biggest legends of the game, playing in his home country. It was an electric atmosphere, and we stuck it out and got the win,” Sock said after the match.
Sock helps Bob Bryan win his first tie as captain
Last week, United States team captain Mardy Fish tested positive for COVID-19.
Fish contacted Bryan and asked him if he was willing to be acting captain during the Davis Cup Finals group stage. After captaining the United States to a victory over Great Britain, Bryan said he knew it would a tight and tough battle.
“Oh man, that was an instant classic. We knew it was going to be a barn-burner. The courts are slow and we expected physical matches. Our guys were playing great in practice but know those guys have been here a while and they’re really dialled in.
The crowd was great, and we’re just happy to get through. We’ve got some more tough times ahead, and I expect Team GB is going to do the business in their matches,” Bryan said. The United States took an early lead in the tie after Tommy Paul defeated Daniel Evans.
Taylor Fritz had a chance to seal the win for the United States, but he lost to Cameron Norrie in the second rubber. Luckily for the Americans, Sock and Ram delivered in the doubles match and they escaped with a win.
