Swiatek set to be in action in early October.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has signed up to compete at the inaugural San Diego Open. Since there won’t be Asian swing this season, San Diego was given a chance to host a WTA 500 tournament. The San Diego Open, which is scheduled to take place between October 10-16, will also feature six more top-10 players.
Besides Swiatek, Anett Kontaveit, Paula Badosa, Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, Cori Gauff and Caroline Garcia have also signed up to play.
Swiatek to focus on ‘technical stuff’
Swiatek, who clinched her third Grand Slam title after beating Ons Jabeur in the US Open final, has secure a place for the WTA Finals.
Since Swiatek doesn’t have to worry about that, she indicates she will now focus on “some technical stuff” and likely try out some new things in her game. “I’m happy that I don’t have to be in the Race because I’m pretty safe with the points that I have.
It’s a totally different situation than last year. So for sure I want to use that time to work on some technical stuff, especially because we’re going to have a couple of weeks of just practicing. I think it’s going to be a nice time for me to settle with all the things that happened this season and get this solid work.
I’ve been practicing a lot right now but it was still in between tournaments. It’s not like you can do so much in a mini-preseason period. So I’m for sure going to use that time,” Swiatek told the WTA insider podcast.
Swiatek has had a stunning season and she is the top favorite wherever she goes. This season, Swiatek has won seven titles. Now, Swiatek is taking some time off to rest following her US Open victory. The San Diego Open starts in four weeks and Swiatek definitely has time to rest and prepare well for the American WTA 500 tournament.
