Iga Swiatek, after Ash Barty’s retirement, became world number one and dominator of the WTA Tour: winner of 1000 titles and the Roland Garros. Since winning the French Open, however, she has struggled to find herself, coming out earlier than expected from the third Grand Slam of the season, Wimbledon.
To find her way back to domination at the last Grand Slam event, the Pole enjoyed some rest time. She said: “I feel ready: I am very excited to play this tournament and happy to have had time to train a little more.
It’s great to come back here and learn more and more every year, I feel that progress; therefore, I hope to demonstrate them in my matches.”
From Nadal to Serena Williams
On the occasion of the demonstration for peace in favor of Ukraine, Iga Swiatek had the opportunity to play with her idol, Rafael Nadal.
She told: “It was an extraordinary, unique experience. Rafa is fantastic, as a child I never imagined playing alongside him and teaming up together. The whole event was wonderful, I am happy to have participated and to have helped the cause.”
The US Open are also the last tournament of those who have dominated the women’s circuit for years: Serena Williams. Iga explained: “For me it is still surreal when I see her, I feel like a girl next to her. I never felt I could be a tennis player because I saw her much stronger than her.
Mentally, she is a specialist in intimidating you, like being number one. Now I’m trying to do it, even if I can’t! Serena is undoubtedly a great example, she is an incredible person; she paved the way for many others and taught us that anything can be achieved, the sky is the limit.”
Iga and Rafa are the main favorite to win the US Open women’s and men’s singles. For Serena this will be the last chance to win her 24thm, in order to match Margaret Court’s record.
