Iga Swiatek on Ashleigh Barty’s shock retirement, how it affected her

Swiatek replaced Barty at the No. 1 spot after the Australian announced a shock retirement.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek underlined that she had the same goals in place even before Ashleigh Barty retired but admitted that Barty’s shock retirement did put her in a bit of “demanding place.” After Barty announced a shock retirement at 25, Swiatek became the new No.1 and replaced her as the face of women’s tennis.

This season, Swiatek has won seven titles and there was a period during which she went on a 37-match winning streak. “I saw voices that Ash’s decision gave me wings and I decided to ‘use the place that appeared ‘Meanwhile, my goals have not changed since the beginning of the season and I was consistently pursuing them,” Swiatek told Dominik Senkowski.

Swiatek on how Barty’s retirement affected her

After Swiatek won Indian Wells, Barty announced her retirement from tennis and asked to be removed from the WTA rankings list.

Going into Miami, Swiatek knew that she would be the new No. 1 after the Sunshine Double. Barty’s shock retirement put Swiatek in a bit of a tough situation because she basically had to learn overnight how to be the face of women’s tennis.

“The fact that Ash decided to end her career, I was number two for less than a week, and then in one day I became number one, only meant that I had to quickly find myself in a new, incredibly demanding situation,” Swiatek explained.

Meanwhile, the season has entered its final phase. It’s the time of the season when top players often experience a drop in their game and forms. Now, Swiatek explains why that tends to happen to top players.

“It is more difficult because there is growing tiredness, homesickness, the usual overload associated with the demanding season in tennis. I don’t focus on having to stay on top. I focus on the next steps and on developing myself,” Swiatek said.

Swiatek has had an astonishing 2022 season and she would certainly like to cap off the season by winning her first WTA Finals title.
