Iga Swiatek: “I’m just playing, the attention is on Serena Williams”

With almost double the points on the second classified in the WTA ranking, Iga Swiatek continues to travel at a different pace compared to all the athletes of the WTA Tour. The Polish tennis player became a true protagonist in the early part of the season, winning six tournaments in a row and securing a truly incredible haul of points, as well as prestigious titles, such as the Roland Garros.

On hard-courts, the 21-year-old was not 100% effective and suffered some understandable setbacks: now the girl is trying to return to dominate the scene at the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of 2022. The number one, after the clear affirmation on the Italian Jasmine Paolini, gave an encore against the American Sloane Stephens with the final score of 6-3, 6-2, showing an excellent level of play during the entire challenge, practically always in check.

Iga Swiatek: “I’m just playing, the attention is on Serena Williams”

At the end of the challenge, in the usual interview on the court, Iga seemed quite on her own and was very clear with the words: “Adaptation to the fast courts? Can you see the difference at the Roland Garros and at Wimbledon, when I returned after winning at Paris, but I’d say I really don’t care.

If I’m feeling good and fit, I’m confident in my game and options. In part, therefore, it all depends on me.” The scene of the first rounds was undoubtedly taken by Serena Williams, in New York as a professional player for the last time.

One aspect that bothered Swiatek a bit, who was questioned about her role in this competition: “I’m just playing and focusing on my tennis, that’s the most important thing. It is quite obvious to me that she will be the center of attention in this tournament.

If she totally deserves it, she is her moment,” she added and concluded. On Saturday 3 September she will be back on the court again for the third round, in which she will face the other American Lauren Davis. Another challenge not to be underestimated for the Warsaw native, who absolutely wants to continue her adventure in the US city.
