Former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski thinks it just “seems wrong” to have Novak Djokovic missing two Grand Slams this season. At the start of the season, Djokovic was denied participation at the Australian Open because of his vaccination status.
Now, Djokovic is missing the US Open because of the same reason. Djokovic is still a strong force in the game and many believe he would have been the top favorite for the US Open title if he was allowed to compete in New York.
“It just seems wrong not having the best player in the world missing two slams this year,” Rusedski tweeted.
Djokovic waited until the last moment but nothing changed
Djokovic was waiting until the last moment, hoping the CDC would change their policy and allow him to enter the United States.
But nothing happened and Djokovic withdrew from the US Open last Thursday. “Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open,” Djokovic announced on Thursday. “Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support.
Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!” At the US Open, Djokovic is a three-time champion. The US Open expressed their disappointment after Djokovic pulled out of the tournament.
Also, the tournament is hoping to welcome Djokovic back to the tournament next year. “Novak is a great champion and it is very unfortunate that he will be unable to compete at the 2022 US Open, as he is unable to enter the country due to the federal government’s vaccination policy for non-US citizens.
We look forward to welcoming Novak back at the 2023 US Open,” the USTA said in a statement released. After winning Wimbledon, Djokovic admitted that he was unsure when he would play again. Also, Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic said after Wimbledon that he wasn’t really optimistic that the Serb would be allowed to compete in the United States.
