Tiafoe thinks it was Kyrgios who deserved to the Wimbledon title.
Frances Tiafoe said he felt Nick Kyrgios was the better player in the Wimbledon final but it was Novak Djokovic’s experience that prevailed in the end. In this year’s Wimbledon final, Djokovic recovered from a set down to beat Kyrgios 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (3).
Djokovic has played over 30 Grand Slam finals throughout his career, while Kyrgios was in his first singles Major final. Kyrgios competed extremely well but it was Djokovic who ended up winning his seventh Wimbledon title.
“I totally think so. You think where Nick was at. I mean, I say it straight out, I think he should have won Wimbledon. I think he was the better player in that final. Novak mentally, he got exposed. That’s where the experience kicked in for Novak.
I think tennis-wise, Nick played a better match,” Tiafoe explained.
Tiafoe thinks younger guys can win Grand Slams
This season, Kyrgios and Casper Ruud came really close to winning their first Grand Slams. In the French Open final, Ruud suffered a straight-set defeat to Rafael Nadal.
The Big Three are maybe still winning but Tiafoe feels younger guys have what it takes to win Majors. “There’s guys that can do that. I mean, I’ve beaten guys in big matches, slams, big courts. Just a matter of doing it for two weeks, getting the rest, make quarterfinals, bunch of fourth rounds.
Again, it’s not like you got to beat Murray in his prime and DelPo, Fed. It’s not the case any more. I mean, guys are good, but the level is not as drastic. Like Novak, as well. I think anybody can win. I mean, anyone who’s really got the game,” Tiafoe added.
Meanwhile, Tiafoe kicked off his US Open campaign with a 7-6 (0) 6-4 6-3 win over Marcos Giron. Tiafoe is hoping to make another good run at the US Open. Previously, Tiafoe reached back-to-back US Open round-of-16 in 2020 and 2021.
