Gauff reacts to Federer retiring from the game.

2022 French Open finalist Cori Gauff thanked Roger Federer for everything he has done for the game. Gauff, 18, grew up watching 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer. After Gauff turned pro, she had the privilege to receive advice from one of the greatest players of all time.

With Federer retiring from the game after next week’s Laver Cup, Gauff took to Twitter to pay her tribute to the Swiss. “Thank you @rogerfederer for elevating the game in so many ways on and off the court. thank you for all the advice you’ve given me over the years.

Thank you for being the best role model for so many. thank you for everything (goat emoji) #RForever,” Gauff tweeted.

Gauff paid tribute to Federer, Serena Williams

After Serena Williams’ final US Open run came to an end, Gauff opened up on how Serena and Venus Williams inspired her tennis journeys.

With Serena retired and Venus likely heading into retirement in the near future, Gauff wants to follow in their footsteps and be a great role model. “For me, for any kid, but especially ones that look like me, I think for the most part, just continue to do what you want to do, no matter what people say,” Gauff said.

“I think for me, the Williams sisters definitely inspired me to play tennis because I saw someone like me playing in a sport with not a lot of people looking like me. I hope I can be that for other kids. Yeah, that’s all I can say really.

Just continue to be our authentic selves. Don’t try to feed into any stereotypes, just be you.” Meanwhile, Gauff is currently resting after the US Open. Gauff, who was hoping to win her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, suffered a US Open quarterfinal defeat to Caroline Garcia. This week, Gauff was confirmed for the San Diego Open, which starts on October 10.
