Murray was getting tips from three greats during his Laver Cup match.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray gave credit to fellow Team Europe members after his opening Laver Cup match. In the third singles match of Friday’s programme at the Laver Cup, Murray took on Alex de Minaur of Team World.
Throughout the match, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were giving tips to Murray and encouraging to keep pushing. In the end, Murray fell just short as de Minaur won 5-7 6-3 10-7. “Sometimes I was maybe in a good position and I was just getting encouragement from them,” Murray said, per Tennis Majors.
“Of course you listen – I mean, these are some of the best minds ever in the game. I think it’s something that people maybe don’t talk about enough with them – their tennis IQ and their understanding of the game and moments and matches and how to play and figuring things out a bit whilst you’re out there”.
Murray on Federer’s final night
On the final match of Friday’s programme in London, Federer teamed up with Nadal in his final match. The O2 Arena was sold out for Federer’s final match and the atmosphere was absolutely electric.
Murray, who is making his Laver Cup debut this week, was on the bench, rooting for Federer and Nadal, who ultimately fell short in three sets to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. “It was special to be a part of this occasion and team.
It was surreal sitting or standing and looking over at my team and having Bjorn Borg supporting you. With all of the guys that were there on the bench, it was really cool and a memory I’ll have for a long time,” Murray said.
Murray, Nadal and Novak Djokovic were all a part of Federer’s final tournament. Murray enjoyed the experience and it was certainly special for Federer to be accompanied by the rest of the Big Four group in his final tournament.
